Packing for a semester abroad on a student budget
Pack for the project, not the postcard
It's tempting to pack for the version of the trip you're imagining. Past participants recommend packing for the actual project first — closed shoes for fieldwork, modest clothing if the culture calls for it — and sightseeing outfits second.
Bring less than you think, budget for gaps locally
Overpacking is the most common regret. A smaller bag with a modest local shopping budget for anything missing tends to work out better than an overstuffed suitcase.
Don't skip the paperwork checklist
Physical and digital copies of your passport, acceptance letter, travel insurance, and emergency contacts matter more than any single item of clothing — build this list first.
What past exchange participants actually packed — and what they left behind.
