Preparing your first lesson plan abroad
Start simpler than you think you need to
Returning Global Teachers consistently say the same thing: your first lesson plan should be simpler than what you'd prepare at home. You don't yet know the class's English level, attention span, or classroom norms.
Build in more interaction, less lecture
Classrooms abroad often respond better to activity-based teaching than long explanations — games, group work, and physical movement tend to hold attention better across a language gap.
Expect to rewrite lesson one by day three
Nearly every Global Teacher rewrites their first lesson plan within the first few days on the ground. That's normal — pre-departure training gives you a framework, not a fixed script.
Practical tips from returning Global Teachers on classroom prep and culture shock.
